School Services Program
Wellness School Counseling Service
Wellness School Counseling Service partners with schools to address students' behavioral, social, emotional, and academic challenges.
School counseling provides students with the opportunity to talk to someone who listens in a supportive, non-judgmental manner. Counselors help students clarify issues, explore emotions, discuss problem-solving strategies, and set personal goals.
We offer short-term individual counseling (up to 12 sessions per academic year), with the duration tailored to each student’s needs. After an initial consultation with parents and teachers, the counselor develops a personalized treatment plan, which includes parent coaching and a support system for the school and teachers. If long-term or specialized treatment is needed, our counselors assist in finding appropriate referrals within the community.
Common Reasons Students Seek Counseling:
- Depression
- Anxiety and stress management
- Addictions (gaming, substance abuse, pornography, etc.)
- Peer pressure
- Academic difficulties
- Adjustment to school and parental expectations
- Self-esteem and self-image concerns
- Relationship and family issues
- Other emotional or mental health disorders
Cognitive And Academic, Social, Behavior Assessment
Comprehensive evaluations designed to measure a student's intellectual functioning, academic skills, social interactions, and behavioral patterns. These assessments help identify strengths, challenges, and specific learning needs, guiding educators and parents in developing personalized support plans for optimal student development in both academic and social environments.
The purpose of a school readiness assessment is to provide parents and schools with advice on whether a child is ready to start school and to assist in making informed decisions about how to proceed.
School Readiness Factors:
While age is a key factor in determining whether your child is ready to start school, there are other important aspects to consider:
- Physical, emotional, social, and academic readiness
- Concentration
- Language skills
- Ability to cope with change
What is involved in a school readiness assessment?
A school readiness assessment includes testing and evaluation in the following areas:
- Concept knowledge
- Attention
- Memory
- Speech and language
- Auditory processing
- Fine and gross motor skills
- Social skills
- Behavioral, psychological, and emotional functioning
A meeting with the school can also be arranged to discuss the assessment results and help the school implement strategies to support the child during their first year.
What is a Psychoeducational Assessment?
A psychoeducational assessment is initiated by teachers and/or parents concerned about a student’s cognitive functioning, learning, attention, or behavior at school. It also serves as a diagnostic tool to determine whether the student has learning difficulties, autism, ADHD, or other related challenges.
These assessments evaluate a student’s:
- Thinking/reasoning abilities
- Underlying psychological processes (e.g., memory, attention, processing, executive functioning)
- Academic achievement (e.g., reading, writing, math, oral language)
- Behavioral and social-emotional functioning
This is done in the context of the student’s developmental stage and in comparison to other students of the same age.
What is the goal?
The goal is to identify both strengths and areas of weakness cognitively and academically so these can be addressed through targeted interventions or additional support. The assessment also aids in diagnosing conditions such as learning disabilities, autism, ADHD, and other developmental or psychological conditions.
How do we do it?
We collect data from multiple sources throughout the assessment process, including interviews, rating scales completed by parents, teachers, and students, one-on-one testing results, and observations. Our psychoeducational team uses this information to comprehensively understand the student’s abilities, challenges, and needs in the classroom, at home, and with peers.
After the assessment, we compile the findings, including any diagnoses, into a detailed report. This report, along with recommendations, will be discussed with the family. If additional support is required, referrals to other services may be made.
What is an IQ Assessment?
An IQ (Intelligence Quotient) assessment measures a student’s cognitive abilities, including their capacity to think and reason. The IQ score offers a standardized comparison of a student’s cognitive abilities relative to peers of the same age.
There is a common misconception that IQ tests measure intelligence directly. Instead, they assess a person’s potential for intelligence—evaluating their ability to learn and apply information rather than measuring what they have already learned.
What does the WISC-V IQ Test consist of?
The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Fifth Edition (WISC-V) is a widely used tool for assessing the intelligence of children between the ages of 6 and 16. The WISC-V breaks intelligence into several cognitive domains, each measured by different subtests:
- Verbal Comprehension: Measures the ability to understand, use, and think with language.
- Visual-Spatial: Assesses the ability to evaluate visual details and understand spatial relationships.
- Fluid Reasoning: Tests the ability to solve novel problems and identify patterns.
- Working Memory: Measures the capacity to hold and manipulate information over short periods.
- Processing Speed: Evaluates the speed at which a student can perform simple cognitive tasks.
The WISC-V provides a comprehensive picture of a student’s cognitive abilities by examining these different areas of intelligence.
Benefits
IQ assessments, such as the WISC-V, are excellent predictors of academic achievement. They help identify both a student’s cognitive strengths and areas for improvement. Results from the WISC-V can highlight talents that may have been overlooked, opening doors to enhanced educational opportunities. Additionally, the assessment helps educators, parents, and psychologists devise individualized learning plans tailored to the student’s unique abilities and needs.
The global employment landscape has undergone significant changes in recent years, with many new careers emerging in the 21st century and rapidly gaining momentum.
What is Interest, Skill, & Career Assessment?
Interest, Skill, and Career Assessment is a psychometric tool designed to help students better understand their strengths and weaknesses. Schools and parents use this valuable information to guide individuals toward the right career path that aligns with their interests and skills.
These assessments are particularly useful for school and college students seeking clarity about their best-fit career options. Students can succeed more efficiently and effectively by identifying the most suitable courses and career paths early on.
Key Benefits for Students:
- Narrowing Career Options: This assessment helps students shortlist a few career paths from the many options available, focusing on those that best match their skills and interests.
- Self-awareness: Students gain deeper insights into their own strengths and weaknesses, enabling them to adapt more quickly to market demands.
- Reducing Career Misalignment: One of the common causes of stress and dissatisfaction in the workplace stems from pursuing a career that doesn’t align with one’s true abilities and interests. By identifying the best-fit career, students can avoid the feelings of being a "misfit" in their chosen profession.
By thoroughly understanding themselves through this assessment, students can make informed decisions, pursue their dream careers, and ultimately lead fulfilling and successful lives.
Mental health issues have increasingly become a significant concern among students and academics. School counselors are witnessing a record number of students grappling with various mental health challenges, ranging from depression and anxiety to more serious psychiatric disorders. Over the past five years, there has been a notable rise in self-harming behaviors, including severe suicidal thoughts, addiction, and self-injurious actions.
The pressure of parental expectations combined with the rigorous demands of academic life contributes to these mental health issues. Millennials, in particular, have shown increased vulnerability to the stressors associated with school life, having grown up with instant access to information through the Internet. This environment has made it more challenging for them to cope with frustration, tolerance, disappointment, and delayed gratification.
Benefits of Early Mental Health Screening:
A student's mental health plays a crucial role in their academic success. Their overall well-being significantly influences factors such as school performance and graduation rates.
Conducting a mental health screening is one of the quickest and easiest methods to identify potential mental health conditions early and connect students with the necessary support. Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, addiction, and self-injury are real, common, and treatable, and recovery is indeed possible.
Workshops / Professional Development
As the world has changed, so have schools and our understanding of teaching and learning. The teacher-student relationship has become more complex and demanding than ever before. Teachers often face the challenge of instructing students at various levels of academic progress.
Connecting with all students, regardless of their aptitude level, is crucial for effectively disseminating educational material. Ongoing teacher training can be a vital resource in supporting their success. By receiving appropriate training, teachers help their students succeed and enhance their professional development by updating their knowledge and skills.
We offer a variety of training programs in multiple areas of education, including addressing learning and behavioral issues in the classroom, implementing character-building initiatives in schools, creating effective lesson plans, classroom management, and many others that can be customized to meet your school’s specific needs.
There is a strong consensus that parents play a crucial role in their children's development and functioning. Children acquire many skills fundamentally shaped by their interactions with their parents and the broader social environment. The quality of parenting a child receives is regarded as the most significant modifiable factor influencing the development of behavioral and emotional issues in children.
Parent-child interactions impact various areas of development, including self-esteem, academic achievement, cognitive growth, and behavior. To ensure the best outcomes for their children, parents must balance the disciplinary and maturity demands necessary for integrating their children into the family and social system while fostering an atmosphere of warmth, responsiveness, and support.
Parental knowledge is also a key factor. Training and workshops for parents are designed to strengthen parenting abilities and promote the development of new competencies.
We offer a variety of workshops to equip parents with essential skills for addressing challenges such as managing difficult behavior, sibling rivalry, sexual education, family communication, and more.
Workshops are vital in the school environment, promoting students' well-being and raising awareness on important topics. Through these workshops, students gain new knowledge and strategies to help them succeed in both their academic and life skills by putting these skills into practice.
In today's academic world, great study skills are crucial for students. To excel academically, students need to master and practice these skills. Unfortunately, many students have never been taught effective study techniques, the importance of time management, or the value of a positive attitude. These critical skills must be learned and applied in school or college settings.
Wellness offers workshops focusing on improving study skills, time management, and organizational abilities. By helping students identify effective study techniques and discover the best methods for them, learning becomes easier and more effective.
Additionally, we provide workshops specifically designed to address the challenges students face in the 21st century. Our workshops cover a wide range of topics, including sexual education, peer pressure, bullying, drug awareness, interpersonal skills, career guidance, passion discovery, and gadget addiction.
These workshops aim to equip young people with the tools to effectively manage the challenges and uncertainties of daily life while building confidence, assertiveness, and decision-making skills. This foundation will help them develop into successful and responsible adults.
